Magazine Publishing Workshop For Teens At The University of Memphis

MTLY Communications has announced that it will host a week long Magazine Publishing Workshop For teens during Spring Break 2013. Aspiring young Publishers, Writers, Photographers & Graphic Designers will have an opportunity to learn about the Magazine Publishing Industry while also planning the first issue of a new Teen Magazine headed to the Memphis area. 

Students will meet March 11 - 15, 2013 at the University of Memphis from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Meeman Journalism Building. Teens will learn what it takes to work on the staff of a magazine, tour the campus of the University of Memphis, meet the Dean of the Journalism Department, hear from Magazine Publishers, Photographers, Graphic Designers, Writers and other Guest Speakers & hone their skills as writing, editing, photography and design skills.

By the end of the week, each student will have a better grasp on how they can use their skills to contribute to a magazine & will help to lay the groundwork for a new Teen Magazine to launch in Memphis Winter 2013.  

Each student will have his/her work published in the new Teen Magazine and will have an opportunity to function as a staff member for the magazine and contribute work on an ongoing basis. 

The workshop is open to students grades 6th - 12th grade. The course fee for the workshop is $125.00. Payment plans are available upon request. Includes Breakfast, Lunch and Closing Celebration. Students must complete an application to participate. Request an application at mtlycommunications@gmail.com. Applications are due by February 14, 2013.  

MTLY Communications is committed to delivering positive and inspirational mass media and through its Spring and Summer programs, equips youth to step into their roles as representatives of positive media at an early age. Teen talks and other programs for youth are held throughout the school year at area schools.

Did You Hear? There Will Be More Changes To The Facebook SOON!

There will be some BIG changes taking place on Facebook Fan Pages this Friday. What's the BIG change? Well, I'm so glad that you asked! If  you didn't already know, Facebook will automatically change everyone's Fan Page to a timeline status on March 30, 2012. Whether we want to see this change or not it's coming and we have to remember one thing CHANGE IS GOOD. I have compiled 5 reasons why this change will prove to be beneficial:

  1. It's much easier to see new fans who have joined the page which is a bonus to see how this person found your page.
  2. It's even easier to see who has posted a new comment, liked a status and when they interacted with your page down to the second!
  3. Insights which includes a graph of your posts, your reach and even who's talking about your page is visible in a much better place and is great for tracking fan activity.
  4. You get to add a Cover Page that fans and especially non-fans can see when they land on your page which will give them a look inside your company with a visual incentive. The image can be changed as often as you'd like to reflect recent events or upcoming celebrations.
  5. Easily tell how many of your friends are fans of your business. If the ratio of friends to fans is out of balance it can help you gauge how often you should tell your Facebook Friends about your fan page. Tip: Post on your personal page at least once per week.
  6. The timeline format helps to tell a better story about your business. When you get ready to make a post on your page, you will now see a MILESTONE button that allows you to add key events that have taken place with your business. You can also add photos which really gives fans a better picture of your company's progress.

Observations In Social Media

Lately I've been observing how different business are tapping into Social Media. I am a firm believer that Small Business Owners can learn a lot from Corporations and vice versa. It is so important that we find a formula that works and stick to it until a new formula comes along.

I discovered six ways Big Businesses are using Social Media:

  1. Unique calls to action - video demonstrations, try before you buy incentives, webinars, etc.
  2. Drive people to website and/or other marketing channels- email sign up forms, segmentation, etc.
  3. Offer incentives - giveaways, nominate friends, family, etc., contests.
  4. Valuable Offers - offer solutions to common problems, go-to source for answers/solutions.
  5. Pinpoint Sales Leads - using deal check-ins, continue what works, end what doesn't work
  6. Understand audience - responses, lack of responses, feedback

Big businesses also use the best Social Media outlet for their target market. This is likely done through trial and error however, once they find out what works, they run with it. From Blogs to YouTube Channels to Apps, Big businesses are using Social Media to their advantage and so should you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's 2012 and everyone is frantically working to make sure that they make the most of this first quarter. Well the use of the word "frantically" may be a bit overdramatic but there is a little truth to the fact that as business owners we want to make sure that we capitalize on every fruitful business transaction that exists.

As it relates to social media, using your Facebook, Twitter and Youtube Channels, etc. can help you secure some very important business transactions. Your Social Media Sites can connect you with everyone from potential clients to future partners. They can even lure some of your old clients back and give you the opportunity to peek in on your competition.

Choose random fans to give small gifts to and then on Christmas Day, give away a big gift like an Ipod Touch, Mp3 Player, Portable DVD Player or $50/$100 Gas Card. Build the excitement by announcing that there will be a big prize on Christmas Day.

Invite your fans to your office & offer FREE Git Wrapping. While there provide them with brochures and promotional items that display your products & services. This is a great opportunity to reel them in as a client or if they're already a client get them to add-on/purchase other products/services.

Merry Christmas

Surprise your loyal fans with a wonderful Christmas present! Schedule a message to hit their inbox on Christmas Day that will give them 20 - 30% off a product/service of your choice. This will make your current customers feel extra special.

Happy NEW Year

Work with your web designer to give your website a Face Lift with a NEW Landing Page. In the days leading up to the New Year, countdown to your NEW Website! Be sure to capture client information from your web visitors. Use Facebook & Twitter to guide traffic to your site. If you have time, even upload a video to your YouTube channel to build even more excitement.
